Last summer, I visited a municipal composting facility in Vermont. Among the rows where organic waste was breaking down into nutrient-rich soil, green bags were sticking out that hadn’t broken down. Why were these bags still intact?

When purchasing green bags with the intent of composting, this is information you need to be aware of because all green bags aren’t created equal.

Compostable bags are made with plant-based materials. When composted, they break down into water, CO2, and nutrients that feed the soil.

On the other hand, biodegradable bags are made with plant-based materials and plastic. While they typically break down, they’ll leave microplastic debris in the environment.

In your journey to transition to earth-friendly products, compostable and biodegradable bags are a great alternative to conventional plastics, which can take years and even centuries to decompose fully. If you want to go the extra mile, read the labels to ensure your bags break down into healthy byproducts, not microplastics. Additionally, look for the BPI certification that meets ASTM D6400 and the OK Compost Home seal on the packaging.

If a product claims to be biodegradable but lacks the certifications mentioned above, it’s best to pass.
